THE WAY GOLF SHOULD BE PLAYED

Starting in June we are playing the ball as it lies for all our events. It's important that you adhere to this rule. If you plan on participating in the club activities, it's only fair that you play by the same rules as everyone else. As a club we need to police this policy within our groups.

Learning to play the ball as it lies will help you as a player. Your handicap will give a truer reflection of your ability. You will learn to be more imaginative in your shot and club selection, which in time will make you an overall better player.

The real challenge is mentally. Just accept the fact you're not always going to get a good bounce, you may not always get a good lie.

It's the way the game was intended to be played.

Mike Gill, Director of Golf

GRILLE HAPPENINGS

The Grille will be closed this Friday, June 6 as we host the annual Heart Association Outing. Friday Grouper will be back the balance of the month.

To help everyone cope with the Summer heat, we are replacing the Wednesday Pasta Specials with Seafood Salads. We will be whipping up a different selection every Wednesday, so be sure to call or check the menu board for a healthful / cool Summer Special. It may be anything from Tuna Stuffed Tomatoes to Shrimp Louie - check it out.

The next Dinner Club function is scheduled for Saturday, June 28. By general consensus, we will be changing back to Coors Light Draft. At $1.50 for a sixteen ounce draft, it is still one of the best bargains in town.

Thanks for your support!!!

AED UPDATE

The J.C. Jones AED fund has topped $590 to date and we continue to accept donations in memory of J.C. W.C. Bradley Company has furnished a defibrillator to the Club for our use and we are in the process of coordinating a training program with the local EMTs and Red Cross to be ready should the need arise. We hope and pray that it never does. The second unit (to be purchased) will allow us to have one in the Clubhouse and one on the course with the ranger to minimize response time.

Patti Jones and the rest of J.C.'s family want to thank the membership and staff for their support in their time of need. J.C. will be missed, but his memory lives through us all.

As always, we appreciate you and ask for your thoughts so that we may continue to improve.

Tom Kubik, General Manager

WHEELINGS & DEALINGS

We offer congratulations and best wishes on her positive career move to Cheryl Klobe, who accepted an attractive offer from her former employers at Gold's Gym to manage the personal trainers at their St. Francis Marketplace location. Cheryl did great work in this department for the past year and we'll miss her enthusiasm and energy. She'll still help us recruit new members, as the Club has a productive business relationship with Gold's Gym in place.

Meanwhile, new members keep pouring in as the "Plus Four" campaign shows no signs of letting up. Welcome to our latest Maple Ridgers Andy and Michelle Hartin, Bryan Howe, Tyler Kimbley, Carter Mauldin, Corinna Shelton and Kyle Johnson! The latter four are Student members, continuing our tradition of middle-school and high-school golfers honing their games under the terrific tutelage of Mike Gill and Gene Matthews.

Excitement about the 12th Annual Chattahoochee Cup abounds! Leisure Lifestyles of Columbus and Auburn has purchased title sponsorship, so don't be surprised to see spas and their "Hot Tub Girls" out at the Club this weekend. The field for this popular Two-Man Best Ball event is filling up nicely.

Once again, I can't pass up the chance to promote "Potential Member Day" on Saturday, June 14th. Never will the rates will be better to join, and a fun Father's Day weekend event has been teed up for you to join, if you've been among the hesitant. For just $25 (advance reservations required), you'll get use of the practice range and a hamburger cookout between noon and 1 p.m., then 18 holes with cart.

After the round, all who join Maple Ridge get a group discount that can take the initiation fee as low as $250, whether as a Full or Weekday member! Call me at 706-569-0966 to save a spot for you!

LET'S TALK TURF

Relief! Recently the Georgia EPD lowered the water restriction from a level 4 to a level 2 for Muscogee County. This will allow us to irrigate our entire golf course three times per week using the odd-even address system. Greens will continue to be irrigated as needed as well as chemical &fertilizer applications to all turf according to the label directions. However, our neighboring counties to the north continue their struggle with level 4 restrictions, but have been given some leeway from Dr. Couch of the EPD.

As of May 29th any golf course under a level 4 restriction that submitted a Best Management Practice Program for Water Use (BMP's) will be granted the right to water with only a 35% reduction in water use from their annual total reported in their BMP's. In April of 2007 we completed and submitted our BMP's, which are currently on file with the Georgia EPD. If in the future we return to a level 4 restriction, Maple Ridge Golf Club would have the right to water using the new guidelines.
